Tower Cases - Supporting ATI 5870 Print E-mail

5870 to fit in large tower casesWith the recent release of the new ATI 5800 Series graphics cards, people wonder if it will fit in their current PC's due to the large size of the 5870 model.  Basically the HD 5870 is 11" (inches) long when you consider the outside case and the plastic sticking out at the end, the HD 5850 is 9.5" long.  This means that the average desktop tower will probably not fit the HD5870 without some modifications to it, but will fit the HD 5850 fine as is.  So knowing this if your still inclined to get the HD5870 and are looking for a new tower case to fit it in, PCWizKid has put together a list of suggested cases that have the room to install the HD5870.

First see below the comparison chart for lengths, notice that at 9.5" the HD5850 ends, and at about 11" the HD5870 ends.  Just to give you an idea, the HD4870x2 PCWizKid reviewed is 10.5" and that was a biggie!

5870 and 5850 lengths in inches

The good thing about the HD5870 is that the placement of the power connectors is at the TOP instead of the side (like most other smaller cards), which makes it easier to install with less interference at the back with the 6pin PCIe power cables.

HD 5870 will it fit in your case?

As you can see the HD 5870 has the 2 power connectors at the top.  Good thing it does because if it was on the side we would have a big problem fitting this in a case.

For sure you want a full size ATX tower case that will support 11" of  space for a card like this.  Here is a list of recommended cases that will support the HD5870:

- Cooler Master HAF932 full tower case
- Cooler Master Cosmos full tower case
- SilverStone Raven 2 full tower case
- In Win MaelStrom full tower case
- Antec 902 tower case
- Antec 1200 tower case
There are many other full tower cases out on the market, but this list of cases has proven to work and has been tested.
